The aspect between the signs
Like the semisextile, a quincunx joins signs in aversion: different elements, different modalities, and no aspect in the whole-sign scheme. It is read as a call to adjust, not as harmony or as conflict.
Sign compatibility
Cancer and Sagittarius: sign compatibility
Cancer and Sagittarius are five signs apart: a quincunx, 150°.

What the two signs have in common
Facts about the two signs as traditional astrology lists them. The reading below is built from these rows.
- Element Water FireNone
- Modality Cardinal Mutable
- Traditional ruler Moon JupiterA light and a social planet
This page lists the facts about the pair and what the tradition reads from them. It gives no score: every pair of people born under these two signs would get the same number, and that number would say nothing about them.
Elements and modalities
Fire is hot and dry, water cold and moist: they share no quality, and the classical scheme counts them as the most opposed pair of elements. Water can put out fire, and fire can evaporate water.
One sign starts and the other adapts: a cardinal sign opens, a mutable sign adjusts.
The rulers
One ruler is a light and the other a social planet, Jupiter or Saturn. The first stands for identity or need, the second for how far and how structured: expansion in the one case, limit in the other.
Moon stands for: feeling, need, habit, memory. Jupiter stands for: expansion, meaning, confidence, excess.
The two signs together
Cancer tends to bring protectiveness: care, memory and a strong sense of home. It tends to need reassurance, and a safe place to say what it feels.
Sagittarius tends to bring openness: frankness, humour and appetite for what is new. It tends to need freedom, and honesty returned in kind.
Cancer wants a base and Sagittarius wants the road. Sagittarius’s frankness can sting Cancer, and Cancer’s hold can feel to Sagittarius like a fence.
What tends to come easily
- Difference keeps curiosity alive and can teach each person something unfamiliar.
- Each has something the other lacks: warmth on one side, depth on the other.
- Direction from one side and flexibility from the other.
- Personal wants meet a wider frame: purpose, or structure.
What tends to cost something
- There is no common starting point, so adjusting is repeated work and patience can run out.
- The same intensity is felt by one as too much and by the other as too little.
- Adapting can slide into being led, and leading into not listening.
- The frame can feel too wide or too tight for what the person actually needs.
What two Sun signs cannot say
Two Sun signs are a small part of two charts. The Moon, Venus, Mars, the rising sign and the houses of each person shape how a relationship goes, and so do age, circumstance and choice.
The aspect here is counted between signs, not between degrees. Two people born at the start and at the end of the same sign stand differently from two born at the same degree, and this page cannot tell which applies.
Two signs are not two charts
To compare two actual people, the synastry tool takes both birth dates and shows the aspects between the planets.
